The New Jerusalem Is A Metaphor For Believers
In Revelation 21:9-10, the angel shows John the bride, the wife of the Lamb.
The wife is the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven to earth.
In Revelation 22:17, we read,
The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.
The Spirit and the bride are speaking to those outside the city, the lost, to come and take of the free gift of the water of life.
The free gift of the water of life is the gospel of grace.
The gospel of grace is what we read about in Romans 3:21-25 and Ephesians 2:8-9.
The Spirit and the bride are speaking to the lost about the gospel of grace, inviting the lost to take of grace and come into the new Jerusalem.
The bride is the new Jerusalem.
The new Jerusalem is speaking to the lost.
This means the new Jerusalem is not a physical city because a physical city does not speak.
The new Jerusalem is a metaphor for believers in Jesus who have taken the free gift of the water of life.
The believers are now inviting those outside the city to take of the free gift of the water of life and join with them in the new covenant family of grace.
