Why Are Only A Few Chosen? - Matthew 22:14

Matthew 22:14 says,

"Many are called, but few are chosen."

Why are only a few chosen to enter the wedding banquet - heaven, eternal life?

The Greek word for "called" in Matthew 22:1-14 is "invited."

In the biblical and historical context of Matthew 22:14, some Jewish people believed in Jesus as the Christ, and they invited other Jewish people to believe in Jesus so they could enter the wedding banquet - the kingdom of God, eternal life.

But the Jewish people who were invited rejected the invitation to the wedding banquet by denying Jesus as the Christ.

Believing Jewish people once again invited other Jewish people to the wedding banquet.

Once again, they rejected Jesus.

Some unbelieving Jews even seized, mistreated, and killed the Jews who invited them to believe in Jesus and enter eternal life in the kingdom of heaven.

This prompted God to burn down Jerusalem - Matthew 22:7 - as the final old covenant judgment on first-century, unbelieving Israel.

This occurred in AD 70.

The invitation to believe in Jesus then went out to the Gentiles, and some of them believed.

The believing Jews and Gentiles were chosen to enter the wedding banquet (eternal life) because they accepted the invitation to believe in Jesus as the Christ.

In his denial of Jesus, the one thrown out of the wedding banquet tried to enter eternal life through the works of the law.

He was thrown into the fire when the city of Jerusalem was burned down in AD 70.
