Christmas And Prophecy #1: The Male Child Crushes The Head of the Serpent
The first prophecy in the Bible is announced by God when he said a woman would give birth to a male child who would crush the devil, the serpent (Genesis 3:15).
In this prophecy, the offspring of the devil would be against the offspring of the woman.
The woman was Mary.
The offspring of Mary, the male child, was Jesus.
The offspring of the devil (the serpent) were the religious and political leaders of Israel during the life of Jesus and after his resurrection and ascension (Matthew 23:1-39; John 8:44).
When Jesus was born, Satan (the dragon, the serpent, the devil) attempted to kill Jesus (Revelation 12:1-9).
He continued to try and kill Jesus through the religious and political leadership of Israel as they conspired against him.
Eventually, Jesus pronounced judgment on the political and religious leaders of Israel (Matthew 23:1-39; 24:1-51; 26:1-67; Luke 21:5-36).
Jesus would eventually crush these leaders, just as the prophecy in Genesis 3:15 stated.
Paul referred directly to this prophecy in Romans 16:20 when he wrote around AD 57.
He wrote:
"The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet."
At the time Paul wrote, unbelieving, Christ-rejecting Israel was under the dominion of Satan and was persecuting believers in Jesus.
Yet in AD 70, Jesus crushed Satan and the leaders of Israel when Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed.
This crushing fulfilled the prophecy of Genesis 3:15 that a male child would crush the head of the devil...the serpent.
